The American Automobile Association of the Northeast will not publish its official travel forecast for the Christmas and New Year's Day period until December.
This year may also bring more people onto the road than past years.
AAA projects nearly 90% of Thanksgiving 2025 travelers will opt for a road trip, with 73 million people traveling by car over the holiday period from Nov. 25 to Dec. 1. The agency predicts an additional 1.3 million travelers on the road compared to Thanksgiving 2024 and recent flight cancellations may push people to opt out of flying.
But based on past experiences, there are some common denominators when it comes to determining which are the best and the worst days to hit the road if you're driving somewhere for the year-end holidays.
