1848: The Galena & Chicago Union Railroad outfitted a couple of baggage cars with temporary seats and invited dignitaries, politicians and the press on this date to take a free inaugural run west from Chicago. The only locomotive that was available and affordable was a used, 12-year-old wood-burner called the Pioneer that was obsolete even by the standards of 1848. Ret
