The University of Akron believes the identities of former students were used to fraudulently obtain financial aid.
The university’s student financial aid office reported to campus police that officials recently became aware of fraudulent student account activity involving roughly 20 former University of Akron students that resulted in an estimated financial aid loss of $60,000. The fraudulent activity, which officials believe began in August, included the submission of false federal student aid applications and identity theft, according to the Oct. 23 police report.
