ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Thanksgiving is a week away, and hundreds of runners are preparing to move their feet so others can eat, racing through downtown Roanoke for the annual Drumstick Dash .

The Dash began 20 years ago as a way to raise funds and bring awareness to the homeless population and those facing food insecurity in the community. It’s a 5K run and family walk that’s said to be the most popular race in the area.

Every Thanksgiving morning, people participate in the Dash to support the Rescue Mission of Roanoke . The organization provides over 200,000 meals each year to people in need, serving three meals a day, 7 days a week.
