Oregon’s rate of student chronic absenteeism remains one of the highest in the United States, new data from the state’s Department of Education shows, with 33% of public school students in the state missing more than 17 days during a school year that is already one of the shortest in the nation .
Among the 27 other states that have so far posted their attendance data for the 2024-2025 school year, the average rate of chronic absenteeism is 21%. That’s still higher than the 15% rate from before COVID closed schools across the country for varying lengths of time, but 12 percentage points below Oregon’s rate.
