The U.S. has issued a travel warning for Japan after the country reported a spike in bear attacks and sightings.

Bears have been spotted in municipalities close or adjacent to popular zones in Sapporo City, Hokkaido Prefecture, Akita Prefecture and other parts of Northern Japan, the Nov. 12 wildlife warning states. Authorities have closed Maruyama Park in Sapporo for two weeks.

“Authorities will generally close areas like parks if a bear has been sighted in the area,” the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Japan said.

At least 13 people have been killed and more than 100 have been injured in bear attacks in Japan since April of this year, Al Jazeera reported. The Ministry of Environment called this the highest death toll since Japan began keeping records of bear attacks in 2006.
