The administrator for the CFMEU has shot down any suggestion the embattled union should be deregistered.

Mark Irving KC told an inquiry into the CFMEU and misconduct in Queensland's construction industry that deregistration would be bad for members, the industry and the state.

He said effectively outlawing the CFMEU would leave a void that would be filled by more unscrupulous operators "if other states are any indication".

He predicted there would be industrial chaos, and staunchly defended the role of the union in maintaining workplace safety.

"This is a dangerous industry. It's dangerous for workers, they need to be kept safe," Mr Irving said.
