The largest television audience ever tuned in to watch an episode of the US TV soap Dallas on November 21, 1980.

More than three-quarters of televisions in the US were tuned in to the episode to find out the answer to the question: "Who shot JR?"

JR was the villainous star of the TV drama, having been shot at the end of season three.

And four episodes into season four, the question was finally answered.

But in the space between the cliffhanger finale and the whodunnit being answered, the question was on everyone's lips.

That included the Queen Mother, who asked the actor Larry Hagman to give up the shooter's identity.

In spite of playing the victim, Hagman did not know the answer.

The show successfully kept it a secret by filming multiple variations of the scene that gave away
