Last month, city council passed a motion asking staff to look into the feasibility of licensing “motorized micromobility devices” such as e-bikes used on city rights of way.”
For Armaan Singh, an Indian immigrant who makes a living delivering for UberEats, there are looming fears that could cause a “struggle” for many recent immigrants who rely on the low-barrier line of work.
“It will not be good for them,” Singh said, parked on his e-bike outside Kinton Ramen on Queen Street near Spadina, waiting for a new delivery request. “Some of them might not be able to get a licence.”
His primary concern is that immigrants who might have difficulty obtaining the necessary documentation to prove their eligibility, such as proof of residence, could be excluded from the licensing process.
