Two of Queensland's largest local councils have been fleeced out of more than $5 million by scams involving artificial intelligence over a period of about 12 months.

Gold Coast City Council lost $2.78 million in a November 2023 scam.

An internal review was conducted, and security recommendations were passed on by the Queensland Audit Office (QAO).

However, almost a year later, Noosa Council lost $2.3 million in a similar fraud attack.

About $400,000 was recovered, leaving ratepayers $1.9 million out of pocket.

It was not until last month that Noosa Mayor Frank Wilkie announced the council was the victim of the scam, which occurred in December 2024.
