NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Weapon detection systems are being added to more schools in Nashville and across Middle Tennessee every week, but experts warn these systems, like Evolv and OpenGate, will not keep schools safe on their own.
The National Association of School Resource Officers is tracking weapons that get into schools despite detection systems and has already found nearly 50 incidents nationwide over the past four school years.
NASRO director of operations Mac Hardy said districts are increasingly requesting the systems, but they need to understand their limitations.
“That’s not it. We didn’t just make our schools completely safe. We have other responsibilities,” Hardy said about installing weapon detection systems.
