BAKER, La. (WAFB) - Amber Northern wiped away tears as she reflected on her promotion to lieutenant with the Baker Police Department, making history as the department’s first Black female to hold the rank.

“It’s been tough, but it’s also been exciting. I’ve met a lot of people. I’ve done a lot of things. I’ve helped a lot of people. And I wouldn’t get this career for nothing,” Northern said. “This is something that I see myself doing for a long time. And I’m happy that I made this decision.”

Northern has worked for the Baker Police Department for seven years and currently serves as the school resource officer at Park Ridge Elementary. Students at the school celebrated her promotion with a special event.
