The Morristown City Council voted on Tuesday to send a special request to the State Legislature in Nashville: they’re asking for, by a 5 to 1 vote (and 1 absent), to request every city council position be “at-large” in nature.
Pre-2023, Morristown had four wards that required council members to live in those voting districts but every Morristown citizen could vote for the candidates.
A state law, driven by issues in places like Knoxville and Memphis, banned the “live in a ward/elected by the city” hybrid system that had been in place in Morristown for years, so the city put into place a “live in a ward/elected by the ward” system.
This current system would have been utilized for the first time in the next municipal election, barring any changes.
