Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin, the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer, has picked up the pace after a slow start.
He took 13 games to score the three goals he needed to reach 900 in his career. But he extended his goal streak to four games on Thursday, Nov. 20, and picked up his first hat trick since last season to put him at 907. He added another on Nov. 26 after a pregame ceremony honoring his 900th goal and 1,500th NHL game.
Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky's record last season when he scored No. 895 on April 6 against the New York Islanders. His recent outburst makes it possible for him to pass Gretzky's record of 1,016 combined regular-season and playoff goals. Ovechkin is at 984.
He is in the final year of his contract and he hasn't said what he plans to do after this season.
