A tiny rural hotel run by a family and team of local people has beaten some of the country's biggest names in hospitality to win a major award.

The Kildrummy Inn was named Scotland's Best Hotel Experience at the Thistle Awards – triumphing over established luxury venues such as Cameron House on Loch Lomond and The Torridon in Wester Ross.

The four-bedroom inn, deep in rural Aberdeenshire, scooped the national title after impressing judges with its blend of warmth, quality and commitment to local roots.

For husband-and-wife team David and Sophie Littlewood, the accolade marks a career high.

“It’s the proudest moment in our many years at the inn,” they said, while stressing the achievement belongs just as much to their small team of local staff and loyal guests.
