Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa, for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, receiving a heartfelt welcome from the Indian diaspora. Upon landing at the Air Force Base Waterkloof, he was greeted with traditional performances and enthusiastic chants of his name. Members of the Indian community waved flags and cheered, showcasing their pride and connection to India.
Speaking about the warm reception, PM Modi expressed his gratitude, stating, "Deeply touched by the warm welcome from the Indian community in Johannesburg. This affection reflects the enduring bond between India and South Africa." He highlighted the historical ties and shared values that strengthen these connections.
During his visit, PM Modi attended a cultural program titled ‘Rhythms of a United India,’ where folk dances from 11 Indian states were performed. He noted the importance of the Indian diaspora in keeping their cultural roots alive, saying, "It is commendable how the Indian community has remained connected with its roots."
The Prime Minister's schedule includes significant engagements at the G20 Summit, which runs from November 21 to 23. This summit marks a historic moment as it is the first G20 meeting held on the African continent. PM Modi will discuss key issues affecting India and the Global South, continuing the dialogue initiated in previous G20 presidencies.
The African Union, now a permanent member of the G20, is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the summit's agenda. Sudhakar Dalela, Secretary (ER) of the Ministry of External Affairs, emphasized the importance of the G20 as a platform for addressing issues relevant to the Global South, stating, "We are very happy that these discussions have carried forward under the presidency of Brazil and, of course, in South Africa."
As PM Modi engages with global leaders, he will also hold bilateral meetings, including one with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and interact with Indian community leaders and entrepreneurs in South Africa. This visit underscores the strong ties between India and South Africa, as well as the vibrant spirit of the Indian diaspora.
