Daisy (not her real name), was having a rough time of it when she saw a therapist 15 years ago. At the time she had just fallen out with her two friends, one of whom she’d also dated previous to the friendship.

“I’ve always had trouble maintaining friendships , and then essentially the people I used to spend all day texting were suddenly just out of my life,” she recalls.

For her, it was a crisis that called for reinforcements. Daisy, now 47, used a therapy directory to find someone with a clinic near Selfridges, which was near her workplace at the time. More than half of the therapist listings on the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) directory advertise costs of between £40 to £60 per session in 2025; Daisy says she thinks her therapy cost about £40 a sess
