The Sun Carnival Parade — now the Sun Bowl Parade — was originally held on New Year's Day in conjunction with the Sun Bowl football game, the parade was moved to Thanksgiving Day in 1978 to take advantage of more predictable weather.
Reports from the Jan. 2, 1975, edition of the El Paso Times described a cold day for spectators with three inches of snow predicted on New Year's Day. The theme of the parade was Remember When and the grand marshal was former New York Yankee slugger Mickey Mantle.
