Shashi Tharoor, Congress MP, has commended the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, describing it as a model for democratic conduct post-elections. Tharoor expressed his views on X, stating, "This is how democracy should work. Fight passionately for your point of view in elections, with no rhetorical holds barred. But once it's over, and the people have spoken, learn to cooperate with each other in the common interests of the nation you are both pledged to serve. I would love to see more of this in India -- and am trying to do my part."
This meeting, which took place at the White House, was notable given the contentious exchanges between Trump and Mamdani during the New York mayoral campaign. Mamdani had previously referred to himself as "Donald Trump's worst nightmare," while Trump had labeled him a "100 per cent Communist Lunatic" and a "total nut job." However, the atmosphere during their recent interaction was markedly different, with both leaders focusing on shared concerns such as housing, affordability, and inflation.
Trump remarked that he was "surprised" by the constructive nature of the meeting, calling it "great" and suggesting that Mamdani would "surprise some conservative people." He assured reporters, "We're going to be helping him, to make everybody's dream come true, having a strong and very safe New York."
Mamdani echoed this cooperative spirit, emphasizing the importance of serving New Yorkers over ideological differences. He stated, "There are many places where we disagree, but what mattered today was serving New Yorkers."
During the press briefing, Trump downplayed Mamdani's past criticisms, including accusations of acting like a despot. He defended Mamdani when questioned about his travel choices, saying, "I'll stick up for you."
Mamdani, who will take office in January, sought the meeting to discuss how the federal government could assist in alleviating affordability issues in New York City. Despite Trump's earlier threats to restrict federal support, he adopted a more conciliatory tone, stating, "We don't want that to happen. I don't think that's going to happen."
Tharoor's comments received approval from the BJP, with spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla highlighting the need for Congress to prioritize national interests over party politics. Poonawalla remarked, "Once again Shashi Tharoor reminds Congress to put India First not Parivar. To behave democratically and not like sore losers. But will Rahul Gandhi get the message?"
Tharoor's relationship with his party has been strained recently, particularly after his praise for Prime Minister Modi and his acceptance of a government role following Operation Sindoor. His remarks on dynastic politics have also drawn criticism within Congress, indicating ongoing tensions in his political affiliations.
