A meeting will be held involving just a handful of people - but the consequences will be very significant

A decision that will have consequences for millions of men is set to be made next week. The Department of Health will hold a meeting of a group of leading experts on whether to launch the first NHS screening programme for prostate cancer.

The National Screening Committee (NSC) will on November 27 issue a recommendation at the meeting. And the consequences for men across the UK will be massive.

The condition is the UK’s most common cancer. Every year there are 55,300 cases and 12,200 deaths. Legendary Olympic cyclist Chris Hoy announced in October 2024 that he had been diagnosed with the disease. He said at the time he had two to four years to live.
