The Indian Air Force (IAF) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of Wing Commander Namansh Syal, who died in a Tejas fighter jet crash during the Dubai Air Show. The incident occurred on Friday when the aircraft went down during a demonstration flight, resulting in a fireball that shocked onlookers. The IAF described Syal as a dedicated fighter pilot with "unwavering commitment, exceptional skill and an unyielding sense of duty."
The crash took place around 2:10 PM local time, shortly after Syal performed a low-altitude manoeuvre over Al Maktoum International Airport. Eyewitnesses reported that the jet abruptly lost altitude and nosedived into the ground, creating a large plume of black smoke. Spectators, including families, watched in horror as the incident unfolded.
In a heartfelt tribute, the IAF stated, "His dignified persona earned him immense respect through a life devoted to service. The IAF stands in solidarity with his family in this hour of profound grief and honours his legacy of courage, devotion and honour."
Syal, originally from Himachal Pradesh, is survived by his parents, his wife, who also serves in the Air Force, and their six-year-old daughter. The IAF shared a video of a solemn send-off attended by officials from the UAE, colleagues, and friends, where wreaths were laid in front of his casket wrapped in the national flag.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan were among the national leaders who paid tribute to Syal, acknowledging his bravery and service to the nation. The IAF has ordered a court of inquiry to investigate the cause of the crash, which marks the second incident involving the Tejas aircraft in less than two years.
The Tejas, a homegrown multi-role light combat aircraft, has been operational since 2016. The previous crash occurred in March 2024 near Jaisalmer, where the pilot managed to eject safely. As the news of Syal's death spread, his hometown of Patiyalkar in Kangra district mourned the loss, with villagers gathering to console one another. His remains will be flown to Gaggal Airport in Kangra for cremation, following a special prayer meeting at his alma mater, Sainik School Sujanpur Tira, where he was remembered as an outstanding student and athlete.
