Prime Minister Narendra Modi held significant discussions with various world leaders during the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, reaffirming a shared commitment to global progress and prosperity. On Saturday, Modi met with leaders including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, French President Emmanuel Macron, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
In a post on X, Modi expressed his enthusiasm about meeting Starmer, stating, "This year has brought new energy to the India–UK partnership and we will keep driving it forward across many domains." He also highlighted a productive exchange with Prime Minister Ibrahim, emphasizing the need to diversify bilateral cooperation between India and Malaysia.
Modi described his conversation with President Macron as engaging, noting that India–France ties are a force for global good. He further mentioned a strong momentum in the Special Strategic Partnership with South Korea, indicating ongoing discussions to deepen economic and investment linkages.
After meeting with Brazilian President Lula da Silva, Modi stated, "India and Brazil will continue to work closely to boost trade and cultural linkages for the benefit of our people." He also had a productive discussion with UN Secretary-General Guterres.
In addition to these meetings, Modi announced the launch of a new trilateral initiative called the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership, in collaboration with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This initiative aims to enhance cooperation in technology and innovation among the three democratic nations, focusing on emerging technologies, clean energy, and artificial intelligence.
Modi also interacted with leaders from Italy, Angola, Singapore, Vietnam, Germany, Ethiopia, and Sierra Leone, discussing various topics including trade, cultural linkages, and global health initiatives. He emphasized the importance of giving a greater voice to the Global South in global governance structures.
Before the summit's main session, Modi thanked South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for hosting the event and highlighted the need for a global rethink on development parameters. He proposed several initiatives, including a Global Traditional Knowledge Repository and a G20 initiative to counter the drug-terror nexus, aiming for inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
