The candidates in next year’s governor’s race came after each other following comments President Donald Trump made at his meeting with Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

Trump was asked if he agreed with Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik — who represents a large swath of upstate New York and is challenging Gov. Kathy Hochul for the governorship — that Mamdani is a jihadist. Stefanik has repeatedly used the word when talking about Mamdani.

Trump said he does not think Mamdani is a jihadist.

“She’s out there campaigning, and you know, you say things sometimes in the campaign. She’s a very capable person, but you’d really have to ask her about [it], but I don’t particularly. I met with a very, I met with a man who’s a very rational person,” Trump said.
