The fourth time was the charm for Portland St. Patrick.
The Shamrocks shut out Felch North Dickinson, 53-0, to claim their first 8-Player Division 2 football state championship Saturday at the Superior Dome at Northern Michigan University.
St. Patrick won a Class D state title in 11-Player football in 1992, beating Frankfort, 34-13. But since becoming an 8-Player program, the Shamrocks have gone 0-3 in state finals, falling short in the championship game in 2017, 2019 and 2020.
St. Patrick left little to chance Saturday, storming to a 20-0 lead after one quarter and a 33-0 lead at halftime. Seven different St. Patrick players scored touchdowns against North Dickinson, which ends the season at 12-1.
