The town of Canyon came together Saturday to honor Deputy Fire Chief James Wiley Harp of the Canyon Fire Department after he died following illness. He was 71.

First Methodist Church in Canyon was packed with mourners who remember their friend and fellow first responder. Firetrucks were lined up on 19th Street, east of the church, as services were held. Services were also streamed through First United Methodist Church’s Facebook page.

Wiley died on Nov. 16 after a hard-fought battle with cancer, according to Brooks Funeral Directors. Wiley was born in Canyon, to J.R. and Mayme Nance Harp. The graduated from Ed W. Clark High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, and returned to Canyon to attend West Texas State University, where he majored in computer and information systems and graduated with a b
