Members of Calgary’s Ukrainian community gathered Saturday to commemorate the Holodomor, a man-made famine that killed millions of Ukrainian people between 1932 and 1933.
The Canadian government, along with many others, have recognized the Holodomor as a genocide, intentionally executed by the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin’s regime.
Stephania Romaniuk, vice-president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress’ Calgary branch, said the community has been commemorating Holodomor annually for decades, but the event has taken on a another meaning in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
