A worker has died after an accident at the Gibraltar copper mine northeast of Williams Lake, B.C., Taseko Mines Limited confirmed in a statement posted Friday.
The company says the incident occurred in an active mining area and was discovered around 5 p.m. on Friday. No further injuries have been reported.
The mine has halted operations at the accident site to allow for the investigation and Taseko said RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service were on scene. The Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals has also been notified, it added.
“We are saddened to report the loss of a valued colleague at Gibraltar,” reads a statement from Sean Magee, Taseko’s vice-president of corporate affairs. “Our primary concern is the health, safety and well-being of our employees.”
