The Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) is encouraging state pensioners to check for a six-letter code on their bank statements from this month. Approximately nine million pensioners throughout England and Wales are set to receive a "crucial" payment of up to £300 in November and December to help with energy costs during the chilly winter months.

The DWP has confirmed that Winter Fuel Payments are currently being distributed to qualifying households, with the payments being made automatically from now through to the end of December. Pensioners will get between £100 and £300 based on their situation, including whether they live alone, in a care
