Motorists are being encouraged to sidestep the most frequent MOT failure in winter with a straightforward solution. According to RAC data, lighting and signalling issues were the top reasons for cars failing their annual DVSA MOT test.

Fixter advised: "To stay safe, carry out a weekly check on all lights, including fog and number plate bulbs, and replace any that are flickering or dull. Fixter experts suggest parking close to a wall and using the light reflection to check that beams are working properly."

The RAC further added: "Do the indicators flash as they should? Do the sidelights and fog lights function as they should? Don't forget the number plate lights.
