Israel conducted an airstrike in Beirut on Sunday, marking its first such action in months. The strike targeted Hezbollah's chief of staff, Ali Tabtabai, and resulted in one death and 21 injuries. The attack occurred in the southern suburbs of the capital, an area known as a Hezbollah stronghold, causing panic among local residents.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the operation was aimed at disrupting Hezbollah's military capabilities. His office stated, "A short while ago, in the heart of Beirut, the IDF (Israeli military) attacked the Hezbollah chief of staff, who had been leading the terrorist organisation's buildup and rearmament." Netanyahu emphasized Israel's commitment to act decisively against threats, asserting, "Israel is determined to act to achieve its objectives everywhere and at all times."
Witnesses reported hearing the roar of warplanes followed by a loud explosion, prompting residents to flee their homes. Medical sources indicated that the strike caused significant damage to buildings in the area.
The airstrike is part of Israel's broader campaign against Hezbollah, which it accuses of rebuilding its military infrastructure in violation of a ceasefire agreement. The U.S. was not informed of the strike beforehand but was notified immediately after it occurred.
Hezbollah has not yet commented on the attack, but it has previously denied allegations of rearmament, stating that the Lebanese army is responsible for border security. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions in the region and Israel's determination to counter perceived threats from Hezbollah.
