HAMPTON — Hampton University fired head football coach Trent Boykin on Sunday, less than 24 hours after the Pirates closed a difficult 2-10 season with a 38-10 loss at Rhode Island.

The university announced the decision in a release, with athletic director Anthony D. Henderson Sr. stating the program would begin pursuing new leadership immediately.

“It is always difficult to make changes, particularly when it involves dedicated professionals and student-athletes,” Henderson said in the statement. “Our commitment remains unwavering to ensuring Hampton football achieves the highest standards of excellence on and off the field. We want to thank Coach Boykin for his dedication and leadership and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
