Bangladesh's interim government has officially requested the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India following her death sentence by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). The request was confirmed by Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain on November 23, 2025. He stated that the letter was sent to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs two days prior, detailing the tribunal's judgment regarding Hasina's alleged involvement in enforced disappearances during her tenure, which ended on August 5, 2024.
On November 17, the ICT sentenced Hasina, 78, and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity, following a trial conducted in their absence. Both are currently believed to be in India. The interim government, led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, has been under pressure since the violent protests known as the 'July Uprising' last year, which resulted in significant casualties.
The extradition request follows a previous diplomatic note sent in December, which India acknowledged but did not comment on. After the recent verdict, India's External Affairs Ministry stated, "India has noted the verdict... We remain committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including in peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country."
The ICT is set to hold further hearings regarding Hasina's alleged actions during the protests, with the Chief Prosecutor announcing plans to summon law enforcement officials. The situation remains tense as Bangladesh seeks to bring Hasina and Kamal back to face justice, with discussions about potentially involving the International Criminal Court for their extradition ongoing.
