A wrong-way crash that snarled traffic along Interstate 270 in Maryland started as a police chase in Frederick, according to Montgomery County police. The driver had people in the car with him, including children, during the chase, according to a spokesperson for the department.
Cory Thomas Burkhardt, 37, of Idlewylde, Maryland, was arrested after the incident. Three children were in the car during the chase, and a 2-year-old was held as a hostage, police said.
The chase began when a Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputy saw Burkhardt driving recklessly on U.S. Route 15 near Rosemont Avenue. The car crossed the median and started heading south in the northbound lanes, going the wrong way, according to deputies.
