HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man is safe after losing his boat and drifting in the ocean off East Oahu Saturday afternoon.

And it’s all thanks to Mid-Pacific Institute senior Spencer Allen, a champion and experienced waterman.

That afternoon, Allen and a friend planned to take their jet ski from Spitting Caves to Hanauma Bay for a foiling session when he heard bystanders shouting that someone was lost.

“I’ve been in situations where we’ve had to save people, but never like this,” Allen said. “It wasn’t super rough. It was windy enough to be dangerous, of course, the ocean, the tide, the current, he drifted far from wherever he was.”

The 17-year-old canvassed the area and eventually ended up a mile from the coast.
