More New Mexico families have been taking advantage of the state's child tax credit in recent months, with nearly $7 million in credits claimed since August alone amid efforts to get the word out — but thousands of dollars remain untapped.

"We do think awareness of the credit is going up," said New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke.

New Mexican households with children can qualify for up to $622 in tax credits per child, the result of a law enacted in 2023 designed to help low- and moderate-income families. The credit is determined on a sliding scale based on income and is adjusted annually for inflation.
