HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - A new Hastings city ordinance took effect Tuesday to regulate electric scooters and other similar devices on city streets and sidewalks.

The Hastings City Council passed the ordinance on Nov. 10, adding it to the city code as technology continues to expand transportation options.

The new rules ban e-scooters, e-bikes and hoverboards from streets where the speed limit is greater than 25 mph. The rules also ban riding those devices on downtown Hastings sidewalks on Second Street between Burlington and Minnesota avenues.

Use of electric-powered devices on the Pioneer Spirit Trail is allowed at a safe and reasonable speed.

Hastings Mayor Jay Beckby said the rules aim to protect pedestrians and children downtown.
