The Honolulu Fire Department has determined that a house fire in Kaimuki on Friday night was ignited by plastic food storage containers left on a gas stovetop.
HFD’s investigator said the fire originated from an older-model, gas stove pilot light that ignited the food storage containers on the stovetop, which then spread to the floor — and subsequently the rest of the home
HFD responded to a 911 call for the fire at about 9:38 p.m. Friday at 1144 2nd Avenue. Ten units with 38 firefighters responded, with the first unit arriving at 9:44 p.m. to find the single-family home engulfed in flames.
The home’s only occupant, a 75-year-old man, had exited on his own and confirmed no one else was inside.
Paramedics treated the man for burn injuries and took him to the hospital in serious condit
