FORSYTH, Ga. — The Thanksgiving travel rush is underway, and Georgia roads are already feeling the pressure.
AAA projects a record-breaking 81.8 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the Thanksgiving holiday period from Tuesday through Monday, Dec. 1. Nearly 90% will drive — that's 73 million people on the road, 1.3 million more than last year.
At a rest stop in Monroe County off I-75 southbound Tuesday, travelers described heavy traffic and storm-related delays.
"It was heavy traffic and fortunately it's a Thanksgiving week, so it wasn't as bad as it would normally be," John Ellinghausen said.
He left Dalton at 7 a.m. to head back to Tampa Bay, trying to outrun severe thunderstorms.
