EUGENE, Ore. - A 26-year old Springfield man has pleaded guilty to a federal hate crime for a 2021 assault based on the victim's sexual orientation.

According to court documents, , Daniel Andrew McGee attacked the victim on July 5, 2021, after meeting through a dating app. The assault involved a wooden tire thumper and resulted in life-threatening injuries. The investigation found that McGee had planned the attack for weeks, researching violent anti-gay material and purchasing the weapon online.

McGee was indicted in Nov. 2021 and now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. He will be sentenced in March 2026.

The case was investigated by the FBI with help from the Eugene Police Department.
