Fort Wayne City Council's president announced Tuesday he wants representatives from Google and the state to meet with officials and Fort Wayne residents about the data center being built on the city’s southeast side.

Google earlier this month applied for a permit from the state to use more than 170 diesel-fueled backup generators to keep the data center going in the event of a catastrophic loss of power.

Councilman Geoff Paddock, D-5th, said he still supports the project but was blindsided by that request.

“My first initial hearing on this was maybe half a dozen or maybe a dozen,” he said. “As this grew, it was then diesel generators that obviously rankle a number of people and certainly drew some of our eyebrows as well. Then the number grew to several dozen, maybe 50 or 60, and then I
