COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Republican lawmakers have introduced legislation that would prohibit state Medicaid payments to abortion providers already barred from receiving federal funding – a move that reproductive rights advocates say is yet another attempt to limit access to the procedure in the state.

House Bill 410 , sponsored by Rep. Jean Schmidt, a Clermont County Republican and Adam Mathews, a Lebanon Republican, could limit access to abortion and other forms of reproductive health care by prohibiting Medicaid funding for health care providers that perform abortions.

A provision in the Republican “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” signed into law by President Trump in July stops federal Medicaid payments to entities that provide elective abortions.
