A condemned prisoner endured a horrific botched execution when one of the electric chair's restraints broke - engulfing him in flames and filling the air with the stench of "burning flesh".

John Louis Evans III, 33, was executed in Alabama in 1983 following his conviction for murdering pawnbroker Edward Nassar during a 1977 crime spree.

In his final days, he was heard laughing in a holding cell just 25 feet from Holman Prison's death chamber and informed a prison chaplain he was "ready for death" should the Supreme Court decline to halt his execution.
