As the Blue Jays scour the free-agent market for starting pitchers, they can take comfort in knowing they are operating from a position of strength.
The Jays have a competent starting five in Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage, José Berríos and Eric Lauer. There’s a desire to add another front-line piece to the mix but they won’t be forced into it.
That’s a big change from the last several years when the Jays had to sign someone just to fill out their staff: Max Scherzer last year, Chris Bassitt before the 2023 season, and Yusei Kikuchi the year before that.
