(WKYT) - In the lead-up to America turning 250 years old, we are looking back every day at ‘This Day In History.’

On this date in 1948, the first polaroid camera was sold.

The “land camera” was first offered at Jordan Marsh Department Store in Boston for around $90.

Even at that high price point, it sold out within minutes.

The device was the brainchild of Edwin Land, who invented it after his three-year-old daughter asked him why she couldn’t see pictures right away.

That started the boom of instant photos, which for decades competed with Kodak’s film that had to be developed.

Despite Outkast’s advice to “shake it like a polaroid picture,” you should not shake the photos, as doing so can cause them to distort.
