LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Gusty winds and a wintry mix are heading to the area, prompting safety warnings for Thanksgiving travelers.

Rain is expected to turn to snow and ice, creating potentially dangerous driving conditions. Bridges and overpasses can become slick overnight as temperatures drop.

Drivers should take their time and drive slowly in the deteriorating conditions.

If motorists encounter black ice, they should avoid slamming on their brakes.

Instead, drivers should take their foot off the gas and slowly guide their vehicle in the direction they want to go.

Snow plows will be out treating roadways, and drivers are reminded to maintain a distance of at least 200 feet when traveling behind them.
