MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On this day, Nov. 27, 1917, the National Hockey League was founded in Montreal, Canada.

The league started after the National Hockey Association of Canada Limited suspended its operations.

The NHL has since grown into a massive league, with 32 teams across multiple states and Canadian provinces. However, it started with just four teams from Canada.

The first U.S. team would not be added until 1924, when the Boston Bruins came into the league.

Wisconsin doesn’t have an NHL team, but not for lack of trying.

The Petit family donated over $70 million in the 1990s to build the Bradley Center, in an attempt to bring an NHL team to Milwaukee.

It was later used for numerous other teams, including the Milwaukee Bucks. It was demolished in 2019.
