A Rockville family was pushed past the brink in just one day.
What began as a medical fight inside a Maryland ICU turned into a devastating double loss for the Muñoz family, who were hit with two life-changing blows within 24 hours.
Their father, Jorge — known to loved ones as Yayo — had already spent four weeks in the ICU, according to Gricel Muñoz, who arranged a fundraiser for his daughters.
The family then learned he had been diagnosed with severe brain damage and now requires round-the-clock, indefinite care.
But before they could even process that news, tragedy struck again.
Less than 24 hours later, their mother, Suzy Muñoz, died unexpectedly at her home due to natural causes, loved ones said. The shock was immediate. The fallout was overwhelming. And for Suzy’s daughters, Alana and Violeta, it was a hit no one saw coming.
Suzy — whose full name was Suzanne Kate Davalos Muñoz — was a well-known hairdresser who spent more than 20 years on the job, first with VSL and later with The Color Lab by TSR.
The salon said she “will always be remembered for the warmth, skill, and dedication she brought to our salon community.”
Funeral information shows services set for Dec. 2 at Saint Mary’s Church in Rockville, followed by a private gathering for immediate family.
But while the community prepares to say goodbye, the daughters are facing a mountain of urgent needs right now.
According to Gricel Muñoz’s fundraiser, they’re now responsible for:
- Immediate memorial and funeral costs for Suzy;
- Medical attention and long-term care expenses for Jorge;
- Overdue mortgage, rent, and household bills.
Gricel wrote that the girls are “in crisis mode” as they try to grieve while navigating a sudden financial emergency that arrived long before they were ready.
The salon community, family, and friends have begun sharing tributes, including one from The Color Lab by TSR, which thanked Suzy for more than two decades of service and offered “heartfelt thoughts and prayers” to her family, clients, and coworkers.
She also shared her own message online, writing, “This cause is extremely important to my family and me. I hope you can help. Every bit counts! God Bless.”
Supporters can find the GoFundMe campaign here.
"We pray for the strength and courage of Alana and Violeta to heal from this pain. With your urgent generosity, we can ease this overwhelming financial pressure immediately," organizers wrote.
“Every contribution, no matter the size, is a lifeline that sends a clear message: You are not alone.”
