West Nile virus was detected on the east and west banks of New Orleans amid an active mosquito season that has seen at least three confirmed human cases of the virus in New Orleans, city officials said Wednesday morning.
Orleans Parish mosquito abatement efforts are suspended due to high winds, the City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board said, urging residents to use repellants including DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when they go outside, especially around dusk and dawn. Cooler weather should soon tamp down mosquito populations, officials said.
