California, along with more than a dozen other states, is challenging recent guidance about who is eligible for federal food assistance benefits in a lawsuit filed on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

The lawsuit is about recent guidance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture as it implements changes under the One Big, Beautiful Bill , passed earlier this year by Congress, to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, or SNAP, which provides food assistance to scores of low-income families across the nation. It’s known as CalFresh in California.
