SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Local students will have a chance to reach for the stars and speak to astronauts on the International Space Station.

Lincoln Magnet School students will talk with ISS astronauts via Amateur Radio at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5.

District 186 said the activity is part of the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Program, helping promote learning opportunities through the STEM initiative.

Students have explored orbital paths, communication technology, daily life aboard the ISS and radio science to prepare for the experience, according to District 186.

ARISS is a joint venture spearheaded by NASA to enable communication access between ISS astronauts and schools and communities globally.
